Event Statistics 2012-2016

You’ve probably been in the same situation: there are so many events, you don’t know where you want to go. Your friends are dispersed among many events, and it’s just not the same as it was “back in the days”.

Here’s TMD’s view of things

Disclaimer

This is just an analysis of events listed on TMD.
There are three things to keep in mind:

  1. Not all events are listed. This is especially true for Encuentros, Festivals and Festivalitos, where the true number is also larger than noted. If anyone has other numbers, please let me know.
  2. Some events are mis-labeled on TMD, and some are multi-labelled. I did not correct for either.
  3. 2016 is still on-going — and there might be events missing that have not been added yet.

Stats 2012-2016

Observations

  1. The number of events has risen especially between 2013 and 2014, and it’s “saturated” since then.
  2. More and more Marathons are being organized, or at least events that use the tag “Marathon” on TMD. There are, on average, two Marathons every weekend in 2016.
  3. Milonga Weekends are also much more common: on average there is one Milonga Weekend every weekend.
  4. There seems to be a decline in Festivals – but don’t bet too much on this: Festival listing son TMD are only accidental – there are more complete listings like http://www.tangofestivals.net

Open Questions

just a few – please comment below if you have questions of your own 🙂

  • How have the numbers of travelling dancers developed?
  • Where do we have the best numbers for Encuentros, or Festivals/Festivalitos?
  • What does “saturated” actually mean?

New features on TMD – DJ database

Dear Tango DJs and Organizers,
I have created a database where DJs can be listed together with their contact details and a bit about their DJing profile and activities. The database is only accessible for users of the web site, in order to protect this massive set of personal data from search engines.
This web site is called “Tango Marathon Directory”, but all DJs who are active in DJing are welcome to be listed, even though the focus is clearly on DJs who travel for their work and have “international” experience or aspirations thereto. Each DJ profile also has the opportunity to mention if the DJ is active in the “marathon” or “encuentro” scene, and more.
The database is also meant to inspire organizers to explore the vast world of DJs who are out there, and thus to expand the dancer’s repertoire of different musicalizador experiences.
In any way: you have to register on the site to use it. Feel free to use the contact form on the site for assistance.
Enjoy the days getting longer again, and all the best tandas for you next year!

Living the dream – travel the world and dance tango.

Of course sometimes you need some distraction in your life. Tango dancing is nice, but you can’t do that all the time, and wherever you are.

If you have an internet connection, you could try online games. Maybe bingo is of your liking? It’s popular in many circles, why not try it? Cheekybingo is a good address, and you can win REAL money, too!

And then, once you are rich, travel the world and enjoy all the tango marathons. Every weekend, somewhere else in Europe, or even the world! Here’s a list of the upcoming marathons: Event List.

Imagine you could do every tango marathon there is: one weekend in Madrid, the next one in St. Petersburg, then Hamburg, Rome, Paris, Ludwigshafen, Zurich – and there is more. Yes, it would be an amazing time of your life. Did you know that there is this one guy who quit his job, sold his house and is now travelling the world dancing tango wherever he goes?

Now for some other people that would actually not be worth it. They would rather go to Buenos Aires and just stay there forever. Forever in the world between milongas and more milongas and more milongas. The life of the creatures of the night. Lost in bliss, and also between tango high and tango frustration. Would this be your dream?

How much money do you need for this dream to come true? In Argentina cost of living is still not as high, so not that much. So, if you winn 50000 USD you could probably do two or three years in Bs.As. Doing weekly marathons will come at a higher price, since you’d need to travel more, and of course Europe is much more expensive for all of that. I’d guess if you count a weekend with 250 EUR, you’d still be able to do two years of marathon-marathons next to your “normal” life with your job paying for monday to friday.

How would you do it?

TMD – Welcome

TMD, the Tango Marathon Directory has been around since 2009, and it has evolved since then in many ways.

As an event organizer you can post your events to the TMD in the web, and at the same time reach over 2000 fans of TMD on facebook. Historically the focus has been on tango marathons and tango camps, as well as milonga weekends (such as the Chained Salon at El Corte) – but festivalitos and festivals are welcome, too. After all, it’s about events where you can dance well and much – with local and travelling tango dancers.

As a dancer you can find out about events by date or region. Please follow the facebook page so you can get new updates as they are entered into the database.

Of course, TMD is not the only place on the internet you can find out about these events: it just tries to make it easier to figure out where and when events are – you can usually find these also on facebook or via google.
